Settling in

Interesting fellow, isn't he? The statue is of a Confederate general, of course in the town square at the center of Bentonville, Arkansas. One of the photogs in the newsroom assures me this is standard practice in the south: Whatever the size of your town or city, build a statue of a Confederate war hero and erect him at ground zero.

Bentonville's alright. I'll learn today what my beat is - I'm not sure whether I'm writing as the growth reporter or the city reporter. Either way, I'm working in the Rogers bureau. Here's where Rogers is, if you're interested. It's just across the Interstate from Bentonville and just up a little bit from Fayetteville, home of the Arkansas Razorbacks. GO HAWGS GO!!!!

It's about time for work. It was actually time a few hours ago, but I worked 9 1/2 hours yesterday covering the preview of a new Wal-Mart Supercenter. Despite my skepticism of Wal-Mart in general, the new store is pretty neat. Natural lighting from dozens of skylights, better looking interior, cool electronics section, etc. I have plenty of problems with Wal-Mart. But I'm reserving my judgment about the company until I'm here a bit longer.

More posts to follow, hopefully this week. Although with my track record, we'd be lucky to see another post this month.
