Moving day

Tomorrow morning, I set off for Arkansas, and my new life as a reporter in the South.
Oh. I took the Arkansas job, after doing interviews at the Hollister Free Lance and Benton County Daily Record. The Hollister job had a lot of potential, and I think the company would have recognized my work and promoted me quickly if I did a good job. But the newspaper in Arkansas is bigger, and I feel the editors there will do the best job of developing me as a writer, and kicking my ass : Writers here are expected to churn out two to four stories every day, plus a big feature package and news analysis every 10 weeks.
I'm pretty happy with all these developments. I think God is leading me in this direction, away from Hynix, Korea, California, the Marines and all those other options I've been mulling about since last September. I'm going to miss all my friends in Eugene, my girlfriend and my family. But I've just been treading water these last six months, and it's time to put my life back on track. Even if that means going to work in a town that's better known as Wal*Mart central.
Lillian and I are headed out of Eugene on Friday morning. She's accompanying me to Arkansas in a farewell roadtrip, then flying back to Oregon. I still don't have all my stuff packed - right now I'm loking at a room with sacks of garbage, piles of clothes, empty beer bottles and a dusty computer desk. My dad's coming over to help with the big furniture in 20 minutes or so, and I'd best get my affairs in order before he comes.
But first: I finally picked up Lillian's birthday present to me: We went to Seattle this weekend to get my Utilikilt. Think cargo shorts, Scottish style, with lots of pleats, snaps and heavy canvas. Do you want to see it? I know you do. OK, here are two pictures. I need to take a front shot as well. Picture 1. Picture 2.
I'll post again when I get to Arkansas on Monday.

Glad you finally posted about it. I was about to post on my blog about you moving so that people would know. ;-)
Congratulations, Brook! Though, I am not sure how the kilt will go over in Arkansas. What about Jack?
Brook. You may know I teach two journalism classes at Triad. All Jr. highers.
We planned a field trip to the Herald and news a couple weeks ago. Here is the voice mail on my phone the other day.
"Ryan Brown, Tim Fought. Um, you can return the call or not, um, but I'm canceling the tour that you've scheduled. I think that, that, ugh, given the lies you told me and then the ones you've had printed, it would be wholely inappropriate, so um, that tour won't happen, it would happen under another teacher, if that's the school's wish. Good bye."
Anyways, the kids haven't been informed that their trip may be off. The principal of the school is going to call Mrs. Wright and see if we can't work something out. Just thought you should know, it is kinda funny. Never tick off an old boss! Ryan
Update on the kids.
I ran Fought's message to me, as well as a short commentary on taking out personal opinions on people in this week's Klamath Courier.
I basically said, "The ball is in your court Fought," I also included that I would be happy to sit in the lobby during the tour.
So for now, the tour is off, and probably totally off.
With the money we would have spend on a substitute teacher, we can actually go to Medford and tour a newspaper there, and maybe a tv station, so I am working that angle. Hope the trip is well, Peace!
The trip went really well, Ryan, I'll post about it soon.
I'm glad you're not gonna give up on touring a newspaper. I think you can probably see the situation Fought is in, but I wouldn't like it any more than you would.
There's free poker tourneys here in Arkansas - it's a type of poker league whose organizers are paid by bars, etc to host tourneys and draw more warm bodies into the bar. Last night I watched in pain as I took on three people with my trip kings, went all in on the turn only to watch this girl's royal straight flush draw turn into broadway and beat my 75 % odds of staying alive.
Just as you leave town I find out about a 20 buck weekly no-limit game full of young college dudes. I went with two friends, 30 people entered, and paid top three spots.
Well, I had pocket queens beat by the old ace on the river to finish sixth, my next buddy finished fifth, and my other buddy got fourth.
All three of us had never been, and out of the field of 30, we finished the top three to not get money!
Give us more info, Peace!
